These snazzy coins with the exotic reverse were struck in nickel by France for New Caledonia (Nouvelle Caledonie), which was at the time a French overseas territory. The beautiful reverse with the sailboat does a good job of conveying the atmosphere of the small archipelago in the southwestern Pacific Ocean.
There are similar coins from French Polynesia, but these will have a different inscription on the reverse.
These coins were minted only in 1967 and 1970. They are modern coins made from non-precious metal, but the mintages are pretty low, which provides them with a small collectible value.
