Venezuela 10, 20, and 50 Centavos 1874 to 1876

Venezuela 10, 20, and 50 Centavos 1874 to 1876

These cool, old silver coins were minted for only two years, in 1874 and 1876, by the United States of Venezuela (Estados Unidos de Venezuela). The obverse has Simon Bolivar and the reverse is decorated with the beautiful Venezuelan coat of arms. Coins with similar patterns were also minted in different denominations after 1876; check this CoinQuest page.

Centavos denominations with this pattern are:

10 CENTAVOS: GR 2.500 LEI 835
20 CENTAVOS: GR 5.000 LEI 835
50 CENTAVOS: GR 12.500 LEI 835

The GR is the weight in grams, and LEI (meaning 'by law') is the purity of the silver, i.e., 83.5 percent pure.

A significant age and a low mintage gives these coins great collectible value, especially in higher grades. However, they are somewhat common in very low grades, and a coin worn down to a frazzle will only be worth a few US dollars.

For 10 and 20 centavos the 1876A date is more valuable than the 1874A date, as outlined in the approximate catalog values below:
