THE LORD IS MY HELP (Psalms 118:6) or DOMINUS MIHI ADIUTOR, was national motto under Frederick IV (owner of the elaborate monogram on the front of the coin) King of DENMARK, NORWAY, VANDALS AND THE GOTHS, or REX DAN NOR VAN GOT. Thanks to CoinCommunity for these translations.
These coins were minted by the Kingdom of Norway in 1725 and 1726. For the 4 mark, both dates are about equal in value, but for 2 mark coins, the 1726 is very rare.
2 MARK: 29 mm diameter, 0.241 troy ounces silver
4 MARK: 40 mm diameter, 0.481 ounces silver
The coin in our picture comes from Stack's Bowers Ponterio. Typical catalog values run like this:
2 MARKS DATED 1725
worn: $300 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $1250
well preserved: $2500
2 marks dated 1726 are very rare -- the catalogs do not report a value since so few have been sold
4 MARKS DATED 1725 OR 1726
worn: $50 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $150
well preserved: $500
As always, old coins like this stand on their own merits. The catalog values are very approximate. Refer to our Terminology page for more information.
