Wow, these are gorgeous gold coins. Ponds and half ponds were minted between 1892 and 1900. Some ponds use a different portrait of Kruger, but this page applies only to coins that look like our photo. Stats:
HALF POND: 19 mm diameter, 0.1176 troy ounces gold
POND: 22 mm diameter, 0.2352 troy ounces gold
In general the earlier dates are worth more and the later dates are worth less. First, compute the Base Value (BV) which accounts for the gold content. At today's level for gold, $1230 US dollars per troy ounce, the Base Value for a 1 pond coin is 0.2352 x 1230 = $289 US dollars. But tomorrow the BV will change. Look up gold value at web sites such as kitco.com.
Once you have the BV, add more value to account for the date and quality of your coin, as follows:
HALF POND
worn: add $0 to the BV
average circulated: add $50
well preserved: add $150
fully uncirculated: add $600
half ponds dated 1893 are very rare, add $10000
POND
worn: add $20 to the BV
average circulated: add $50
well preserved: add $350
fully uncirculated: add $1500
These, of course, are very approximate values. Each of these coins stands on its own merits. If you have a nice specimen, take it to a coin dealer or a knowledgeable collector for an in-person appraisal.
All valuable coins are subject to counterfeit. There is a well-known version of this coin with the inscription IMITATION SOVEREIGN KRUGER that is made of brass and is worth at most a few dollars as a novelty item. Apparently these brass ponds were made during recent times as gaming tokens.
