Your father is correct, Andy. Your coin is from France and it dates back to the time of Jean le Bon (John the Good), king of France, around 1350.
In the Bible, Jesus Christ is called the 'Lamb of God' since His crucifixion parallels the animal sacrifices of the Old Testament. The sheep with halo and banner represents that Lamb, and this coin is often called the 'Lamb of God Mouton d'Or,' where Mouton is the denomination and d'Or means 'of gold.' There are other Moutons d'Or but this one is the most common. They are all very valuable.
DO NOT CLEAN YOUR COIN. CLEANING RUINS VALUE.
The coin in our picture comes from Heritage Auctions where it sold for $1650 US dollars in 2011. It is in beautiful condition and this adds a lot of value to the piece. More worn coins would be worth less:
worn: $800 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $1200
well preserved: $2400
If you have one of these coins, take it to a knowledgeable collector or a professional coin dealer for an in-person appraisal. If you like, start an e-mail exchange with CoinQuest and send us pictures of your specific coin. We can give a decent estimate of value and recommend next steps for the care of your coin.
