Guanajuato is one of the 32 Federal Entities of the United States of Mexico. Its official name is 'The Free and Sovereign State of Guanajuato'. In the early days of Mexico, only the country's government had the authority to mint coins in precious metal - local issues had to be in base metal, such as this eighth of a real minted in copper-alloy in the two years of 1829 and 1830.

These coins are extremely hard to find with good eye appeal. (There is a better picture over at our competitor's site: CoinFactsWiki.) If you have one of these and it looks great, no matter how worn it is, it will be attractive to collectors. IVDOLL's worn but likable 1829 coin might sell to a collector for $5 to $10 US dollars. These coins are old, uncommon, and each one stands on its own merits. Catalog values do not even go higher than average circulated. Be aware that these coins were struck somewhat crudely, with dies engraved without great care. The strikes are frequently weak or incomplete, and even a hypothetical fully uncirculated piece would be missing a lot of detail, simply due to the hastily done engraving and minting.
