US Pacific Company Gold Pieces (Fakes are possible) 1849

US Pacific Company Gold Pieces (Fakes are possible) 1849

Look at the amazing coin in our main picture. It is from Heritage Auctions where it sold for $11,500 in 2002. Nice! There are 4 known specimens of this coin. I'm surprised it did not sell for more.

Of course there are plenty of known fakes of this coin. That, most certainly, is what you have, AJ. Fakes are worth zero.

The Red Book, or A Guidebook to United States Coins says that the origin of the Pacific Company is very uncertain. All date regarding the firm are based on conjecture. These coins were probably hand struck with the aid of a sledge hammer.

There are 1, 5, and 10 dollar denominations. I've seen fakes with 2 1/2 dollar denominations.

As always, CoinQuest is indebted to Heritage Auctions for use of their coin photo. Thank you, kind sirs.
