US Hard Times Boutwell Bakers & Confectioners 1835

Token US Hard Times Boutwell Bakers & Confectioners 1835

Major economic downturns plagued the presidency of Andrew Jackson during the early to mid 1800s. Private individuals started to issue copper coinage with political and commerce themes which are today known as Hard Times Tokens. Our general page on HTTs appears at this link [click here], but this one is special. It is very valuable.

The example in the picture comes from the amazing collection of Alan S. Fisher. Unfortunately, we have been unable to contact Alan for the most up-to-date information on this rare HTT (and ask for copyright release). We have, however, seen auction statistics for this Boutwell piece in a few places and have constructed this table of approximate catalog values:

worn: $5000 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $8500
well preserved: $14000

These are catalog values. Pieces like this stand on their own merits and are not at all subject to the whims of catalog makers. Use our Terminology page to convert catalog values to actual buy and sell values.
