US coins today are quite boring: cent, nickel, dime, and quarter. Every once in a while you might see a half dollar or a full dollar coin, but those sightings are few and far between.
Now here is something you do not see every day. It is a 20 cent piece. Silver content is 0.145 troy ounces, but the numismatic (coin collector) value far out-paces the silver value for nice looking specimens without problems such as scratches, stains, spots, cleanings, nicks, gouges, and the like.
The Grey Sheet, a conservative US coin price guide, quotes these catalog values:
worn: $90 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $150
well preserved: $200
fully uncirculated: $1200
These values apply to common-date coins (1875S is the most common date; mint mark is under the eagle). Other, better-date coins carry more value. The list below gives catalog value for better-date twenty cent pieces in average circulated condition.
1875 (no S mint mark): $350 in average circulated
1875CC: $580
1876: $350
1876CC: $70000 (wow!)
1877: $3000
1878: $2000
All these are catalog values which must be adjusted to get actual buy and sell values. See our Terminology page for this important information.
