The earlier dates for these old thalers from the German State of Baden show King Friedrich clean shaven except for a mustache. Later dates show him with a full beard. The reverse side sports the coat of arms of baden, complete with two griffins supporting the shield.
The coin in our main picture (mustache only) is in particularly nice condition, with creamy surfaces and a light touch of rainbow toning. This coin sold in a Westfalische Auktionsgesellschaft (Arnsberg, Germany) for 400 euros, about $530 US dollars, during 2008. The splendid eye appeal of this coin drove the price up. It would probably sell for much more today. Coins with less eye appeal sell for much less.
Here are some typical catalog values for all dates of these coins:
worn: $40 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $75
well preserved: $100
fully uncirculated: $200
coins dated 1857 with mustache-only Friedrich, and coins dated 1865 with full-bearded Friedrich are somewhat more rare; double these values
Be sure to read our Important Terminology page so you can properly interpret these catalog values.
