Germany (Saxony-Old-Gotha) Double Thaler 1624 to 1629

Germany (Saxony-Old-Gotha) Double Thaler 1624 to 1629

Someone put a lot of work into the design of these large (55-60 mm diameter) silver coins from the old German State of Saxe-Old-Gotha. The King at the time was Johann Georg I (1615 - 1656) but this coin has Johann Casimir, Duke of Saxe-Coburg (1596 - 1633). There are several variations of this coin, including coins depicting Johann Georg I on a horse, with the same complex reverse. The name of the king or duke appear as IOHANN GEORG and IOHA CASI, respectively. The coins come in several denominations (sizes) including 1 1/2 thaler, 2 thaler, and 3 thaler.

As to value, these coins stand on their own merits. We quote approximate catalog values and give general guidance, but really nice specimens are worth as much as collectors will pay, which can easily exceed catalog values. Conversely, coins with scratches, stains, cleanings, gouges, and other mutilations are worth much less than catalog values.

If you have a nice specimen, seek out a knowledgeable collector or professional coin dealer for an in-person evaluation. Feel free to send us large, in-focus pictures of your coin and we can give you estimates via e-mail (use the Contact Us link). The coin in our picture comes from renowned international dealer Künker GmbH & Co. in Osnabrück, Germany, where it is in a current 2013 auction carrying an estimated value of $3000 US dollars. It will probably sell for more than that.

Approximate catalog values, averaged over all dates, denominations, and king/duke, are:

worn: $800 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $3000
well preserved: $6000

As stated above, these are very rough values and individual coins are evaluated based on their individual merits.

CoinQuest thanks Künker for use of their coin image. What a neat coin!
