Angola (Africa Portuguesa) 1/4, 1/2, 1, and 2 Macuta 1762 to 1860

The Portuguese explorer Diogo Cao discovered Angola on the west coast of Africa in 1482. A Portuguese colony existed there until 1975. The globe design, common for the coins of Portugal, shows on small denomination coins known as macuta. There are other Angolan coins with the macuta denomination, but this page applies only to coins with the globe shape.

Various spellings of names of Portuguese rulers appear on the coins, as follows:

Joseph 1750-1777 (JOSEPHUS)
Joao 1799-1826 (JOANNES)
Maria 1834-1853 (MARIA II)
Pedro 1853-1861 (PETRUS)

These coins are generally hard to find, and collectors are willing to pay well for nice-looking specimens. Sometimes countermarks are punched into the coins. This, generally, does not add or detract from value.
