Italy Genoa 4 and 8 Lire 1793 to 1797

Italy Genoa 4 and 8 Lire 1793 to 1797

These coins are not found very often, Miklos! The Italian state of Genoa minted them for only four years, and collectors love these coins today! BTW, those animals are called griffins.

Large, precious and with a beautiful design on both sides, the catalog values stay high, as listed below:

8 LIRE COINS:
worn: $200 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $500
well preserved: $1000
fully uncirculated: $2000

The 4 lire coins (with the large 'L . 4' on the side with the crowned arms) are exceedingly rare, and the catalogs do not even list their values.

The 8 lire coins weigh 33.27 grams when genuine, and contain 0.9509 troy ounces of silver. The precious metal only contributes slightly to the total value of the coin though, and it would not be traded as silver bullion, but as a rare coin.

The 4 lire coins are about half as heavy at 16.64 grams and 0.4756 tr oz of silver.

Never clean your coins - cleaning ruins value! A cleaned or otherwise damaged coin, such as a coin with a hole or deep scratches, will be worth much less than the catalog values listed on this page. To demonstrate, the coin in our picture comes from world-renowned coin dealer Stacks's Bowers. The coin is CLEANED and was described as such in the Stacks listing. It sold for only $400 in a 2011 auction. A well preserved (almost uncirculated) coin like this would sell for much more if it was not cleaned.

Be sure to read our 'Important Terminology' page on the top left in order to properly interpret these catalog values.
