Kings named Joao (Joannes, John) ruled Portugal from 1799 to 1822. Brazil, as a colony, used the JOANNES inscription on their coins during this period. The large silver reis coins of the period come with two major designs, shown in our pictures, and include the globe and cross design with crowns, wreathes, and shields in various combinations. Coins on this page carry these characteristics:
- they are silver, dated between 1809 and 1822
- they have the JOANNES inscription
- they have the STAB SUBQ SIGN NATA (For this sign you shall stand) inscription
Values given are very approximate. If you have a nice looking specimen of one of these coins, be sure to take it to a knowledgeable collector or professional coin dealer for an in-person look.
