That's Saint Michael, patron saint of Brussels, slaying a dragon on this silver coin as part of the Brussels Exposition and Railway Centennial in 1935. The coin in our picture comes from Stack's Bowers and Ponterio where it sold in a 2012 auction for $175 US dollars. This coin is in beautiful condition, and that drives the price up. Here are some typical catalog values:
50 FRANCS COIN ALIGNMENT
worn: $50 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $100
well preserved: $150
fully uncirculated: $300
The above are catalog values for coins with coin alignment. If your specimen has medal alignment, it is worth more:
50 FRANCS MEDAL ALIGNMENT
worn: $200 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $500
well preserved: $750
fully uncirculated: $1200
'Coin alignment' and 'medal alignment' have to do with how the front and back of the coin align together. Here's how to tell which you have:
1. Hold the coin with the front pattern upright between your index finger and thumb
2. Your index finger should be at the top of the coin, and your thumb underneath
3. Turn the coin from left to right, like you turn the pages of a book (don't flip it from top to bottom)
4. If the reverse image is upside down, you have coin alignment
5. If the reverse image is rightside up, you have medal alignment
Hope you have the good one!
