The inscription reads EIDGENOSS SCHUTZENFEST IN ST. GALLEN which translates to 'federal shooting festival in St. Gallen.' St. Gallen is a town in Switzerland and this 'shooting thaler' commemorates the shooting competition there in 1874.
The thaler in our picture is in excellent condition. You do not often see them this nice. Many are stained, scratched, or worn. This one, from respected numismatist Dr. Busso Peus Nachf in Frankfurt, sold for 110 euros (about $150 US dollars) during a 2008 auction. It would probalby sell for more today. CoinQuest thanks Dr. Busso Peus Nachf for use of the coin image. It is a beauty.
There is a comprehensive summary of similar shooting thalers on Wikipedia [click here].
