The 'VALLEY FORGE 1777' inscription references a military camp at Valley Forge in Pennsylvania. The American Continental Army had part of its force spending the winter there, and by February 1778 almost 2500 American soldiers had died from cold or starvation. George Washington was heavily criticized for the conditions at Valley Forge, and anti-Washington movements arose in protest.
