The spiffy sailboat design appears on escudo coins from Portugal between 1963 and 1986. All these coins are made of copper-nickel and the large majority of them are worth less than $1 US dollar when in circulated condition. The coin in our picture is uncirculated (or nearly so) and a collector might be willing to pay a few dollars to add it to his or her collection.
There are a few dates that command higher values when in well preserved condition. The values for these dates are low for average circulated coins, but if you can find one that is almost uncirculated, you can get decent value, as follows:
2 1/2 ESCUDOS
1963: $20 well preserved
1964: $20 well preserved
1965: $5 well preserved
1966: $2 average circulated, $35 well preserved
1967: $7 well preserved
5 ESCUDOS
1963: $15 well preserved
1964: $12 well preserved
1965: $12 well preserved
1966: $10 well preserved
1978: $5 well preserved
10 ESCUDOS
1972: $2 well preserved
These are catalog values and must be converted to actual buy and sell values by applying the concepts on our Important Terminology page.
