Mexico 1/8 and 1/4 Real (Octavo and Quarto/Quartilla) 1829 to 1837

These old copper coins were issued by the first Mexican Republic (REPUBLICA MEXICANA) between 1829 and 1837. Most all of them that you see are worn to a frazzle. If you can find one -- either the 1/8 or 1/4 real -- in well preserved condition, you have really found something! The 1/8 real (octavo) in our picture comes from Stack's Bowers and Ponterio where it sold for $300 US dollars in a 2011 auction.

octavo reals dated 1829 are more rare than other dates, double these values

1/4 REAL (or UN QUARTO or UNA QUARTILLA REAL)
worn: $2 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $10
well preserved: $20
un quarto reals dated 1829 are more rare, triple these values
un quarto reals dated 1832 and 1837 are more rare, double these values
