The National Theater in Munich caught fire one January night in 1823 and the water supply to put it out was frozen. Only one year later it was rebuilt. This large medal commemorates the rebuilding.
Medals like this are available in bronze and silver. Gold versions may be available, but we have not been able to locate information about them.
The medal in our picture come from renowned coin auction house Künker GmbH & Co. in Osnabrück, Germany. This is a bronze medal which sold for 50 euros (about $70 US dollars) in a 2003 auction.
