Minted while India was largely controlled by the British crown, before it gained its independence and reclaimed its ancient territory, these coins remain extremely collectible in almost any condition.
Sporting a fancy portrait of the reigning monarch at the time one the obverse, and a peculiar design with a large numeral '4' inside a lined square. The shape of the coin is also worth pointing out, being quite unconventional: it is scalloped with eight lobes!
These coins were minted in copper-nickel. They are quite collectible, and general catalog values are listed below. The coin in our picture comes from Baldwin's in London. It is in nice shape and it sold for 100 British pounds (about $160 US dollars) in a 2011 auction. CoinQuest in grateful to Baldwin's for use of their coin image.
worn: $10 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $35
well preserved: $100
fully uncirculated: $220
For coins dated 1921, add $50 to the above values, unless the coin is worn; in that case, add $20.
Coins that have heavy scratches, corrosion issues, or other problems will be worth much less than the values listed above.
Refer to our 'Important Terminology' page on the top left in order to properly interpret these catalog values.
