India 1/2 and 2 Annas 1950 to 1955

India 1/2 and 2 Annas 1950 to 1955

The Republic of India minted these square shaped anna coins in 1950 and 1955. Only the 1955 two annas are valuable. There is a 1 anna coin with the same 3-lion pedestal and zebu, but it has wavy edges instead of a square shape.

These are modern coins made out of copper-nickel. Sometimes these coins acquire a golden toning, but there is no gold inside. As such, they are worth very little, less than $1 US dollar. Uncirculated specimens may draw upwards of $3 on eBay.

There is a current numismatic stir over two annas dated 1955. One of the reputable price guides shows this to be a wildly valuable coin, cataloging at $500 for a coin in average circulated condition. Other reputable guides show $20 for the same coin. We have checked and found high prices on eBay for this coin, but nothing in the big-time auction houses like Heritage and Stack's. Further, there are acknowledged fakes of the 1955 two annas. Until this controversy settles, proceed with caution if you are thinking of buying.
