Melville sent us this picture of his spiffy 30 reis (1/2 tanga) coin from Portuguese India. It is in gorgeous condition, since you hardly ever see them this nice. They are rare to begin with, and in this condition they are quite rare.
Portugal issued several denominations of these copper coins for use in India. They were minted during the reign of Jose (Joseph I) of Portugal (1750 to 1777). Here's a run-down of approximate catalog values.
2 REIS, 1763
worn: $25
average circulated: $250
5 REIS, 1774
worn: $15
average circulated: $150
6 REIS, 1762 to 1768
worn: $12
average circulated: $100
10 REIS, 1774
worn: $12
average circulated: $100
20 REIS, 1774
worn: $12
average circulated: $100
30 REIS, 1759 to 1776
worn: $12
average circulated: $150
These are catalog values, but for these coins each one stands on its own merits. Actual buy and sell values may be more or less than catalog. Melville's coin in the picture, for instance, would probably sell at more than $150 because of its superb condition.
