These coins come from India under British influence during a period known as the Bombay Presidency. They are made of copper, but sometimes you find them with a gold plating. If you have a gold plated specimen, it is rare and more valuable than the standard copper issues as shown in our picture.

The listings below give approximate catalog values for coins free of all problems such as scratches, stains, cleanings, nicks, gouges, and the like. Remember these are catalog values and must be adjusted in accordance with our Terminology page to get actual buy and sell values. All dates of these coins carry roughly the same value. There are some special proof coins (as well as the gilt coins mentioned above) which command higher values. If you think you may have a higher value coin, seek out a knowledgeable collector or professional coin dealer for an in-person appraisal.

Note to Melville -- It is probably time for you to get some good coin catalogs. You can find them at your library or bookstore or amazon.com. It sounds like your coin was struck on a too-small planchet. This will add some value as an error coin, but not too much, maybe $10.
