Before the unification of Germany, the country existed as a myriad smaller states, the territories of which would morph, split and combine along with marriages between noble families and internal strife.
One of these states was the Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, which throughout the 18th century existed variously as Saxe-Weimar, Weimar-Eisenach and Saxe-Eisenach depending on how the territory was agreed upon at the time.
From 1750 to 1755 coins were produced for circulation in Saxe-Eisenach by Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, and coins were produced for circulation in Saxe-Weimar by the neighboring state of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. Confusing, right?!
The coin in our photo comes from Heidelberger Münzhandlung in Heidelberg, Germany. CoinQuest thanks Heidelberger Münzhandlung for use of their coin image. It is a nice coin!
The coins produced for Saxe-Eisenach will have the acronym 'F.S.E' (literally 'For Saxe Eisenach'), and the coins produced for Saxe-Weimar will have F.S.W. So far, so good! There are additional ways that these coins are distinguished, as listed in the tables below.
