While they may look like it when they have little wear, these large coins from the African state of Tonga are not made of silver but copper-nickel. There is also an official gilt version, i.e. an issue of the coin plated with an extremely thin layer of gold to make it look prettier.
These coins are very modern, and though their mintage is quite low, the collector value has not started to pick up yet.
Approximate catalog values are listed below:
COPPER-NICKEL:
worn: less than $1 US dollars
average circulated: $1
well preserved: $2
fully uncirculated: $4
GOLD-PLATED:
worn: less than $1
average circulated: less than $1
well preserved: $1
fully uncirculated: $8
Great eye appeal is important for these coins. They are large and prone to nicks and scratches in important locations. An otherwise fine looking coin with a large scratch across Queen Sālote Tupou III's cheek will have its value drastically reduced. When it comes to modern coins, collectors want nice presentation pieces, not album fillers!
