Vespasian, founder of the Flavian dynasty, ruled Rome from AD 69 to AD 79. This base-metal sestertius is one of the more valuable patterns of his many coins. Weight of the sestertius range between 23 and 28 grams. Typical catalog values run like this:
worn: $500 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $1400
well preserved: $3200
All ancient coins stand on their own merits, so the values above are very, very approximate. The coin in our picture sold during 2012 for $1600 by Gemini Auctions. CoinQuest thanks Gemini for use of their coin photo.Watch out for fakes. There are several known. On the other side, there is a genuine sestertius with Vespasian facing left, Victory facing right, and the kneeling Jewess facing left which is worth about 10 times the values above. Nice!
