India (Portuguese) Tanga and 1/2 Tanga 1828 to 1834
These coins were minted at the Goa mint in Portuguese India during the rule of Miquel I. Most of them you see are pretty well beat up, so if you find a nice one, it is worth a nice amount. The one in our picture is a 1/2 tanga auctioned by Stephen Album Rare Coins in Santa Rosa, CA, USA, where it sold for $170 US dollars in 2012.
1/2 TANGA: 32 mm diameter
TANGA: 38 mm diameter
Catalog prices run approximately like this for both tangas and 1/2 tangas:
worn: $10 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $100
well preserved: $250
Use our Terminology page to properly interpret these catalog values.
CoinQuest thanks Steve Album for use of his coin photo. It's a nice one!
