Great Britain Conder Cambridgeshire 1793 to 1796

Token Great Britain Conder Cambridgeshire 1793 to 1796

Conder Tokens, also known as 18th Century Provincial Tokens, were first minted In 1787 in response to British coin shortages in outlying areas. Conder Tokens are named after James Conder who was an early collector and cataloged these interesting coins. They are copper coins (usually pennies and half pennies) minted by towns, businesses, and organizations of all types to meet a need for low denomination coinage that was not being provided by government. Thousands of varieties of tokens were minted, many are beautiful and intricate works of art.

The tokens from Cambridgeshire come in quite a few varieties. Some combinations of inscriptions are found below:

'INDUSTRY HAS ITS SURE REWARD' on one side; 'CURRENT IN THE COUNTIES OF 1795' on the other side; 'CAMBRIDGE BEDFORD . AND HUNTINGDON' on the edge.

'INDUSTRY HAS ITS SURE REWARD' on one side; 'RULE BRITANNIA' on the other side; 'BERSHAM BRADLEY WILLEY SNEDSHILL' on the edge.

Values for the two above types are listed below:
worn: $20 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $80
well preserved: $110
fully uncirculated: $225

Rich, it seems that the 'PROMISSORY . HALFPENNY' legend is normally found on different tokens, including some from Cheshire and Hampshire. It is possible that your token is a rarer die combination than usual. In this case the value of Rich's token may well be twice those listed above. Our 'well preserved' annotation corresponds to XF40.

Tokens with poor strikes, or tokens struck on damaged planchets (damaged before the tokens entered circulation) are worth about half the values listed above. Tokens with normal damage will be worth a few dollars at most.

Remember to check out our Important Terminology page on the top left in order to properly interpret the catalog values used on this page.
