Isn't this a great coin? Perak is one of the thirteen states that make up the country of Malaysia. Back in the day, they minted their own coins for local circulation. This 1 keping copper issue is one of those.
Kiddo is absolutely correct in the translation of the Arabic inscriptions. The obverse reads 'Negri Perak' or 'State (of) Perak', while the reverse reads 'Satu Keping 1251', or 'One Keping 1251'. The AH date of 1251 translates into Gregorian April 29th 1835 to April 17th 1836.
The catalog values for these are not bad, as listed below:
worn: $8 US dollars approximate catalog values
average circulated: $40
well preserved: $60
fully uncirculated: $120
These coins are quite scarce, and, we feel, are undervalued in the catalogs. It is very difficult to find them in good condition. The values are probably low becuase many collectors from around the world have not yet picked up on the interesting aspect of coin collecting that is Asian coinage. It is quite likely that values will rise steeply in the near future. Hold on to your coin, Kiddo -- it's a good one!
The coin in our picture comes from Nuri Coin in Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. Nuri's web site has many fine examples of coins like this. CoinQuest thanks Nuri Coin for use of their coin photo.
Damaged coins will be worth a couple dollars at most. Check our our Important Terminology page found at the top left in order to learn more about the ambiguous term 'Catalog Value' used on this page.
