France Louis XVI 15 Sols (1/8 Ecu) 1791 to 1793

France Louis XVI 15 Sols (1/8 Ecu) 1791 to 1793

What an appealing design! A beautiful renaissance bust of King Louis XVI on the obverse, and a standing Genius writing the constitution on the reverse.

It is historically interesting that this coin features both Louis XVI and a reference to the French Constitution of 1791, was written after the collapse of the absolute monarchy. The Genius on the reverse represents the spirit of the republic. France was not officially declared a republic before Louis XVI was imprisoned in August of 1792, and finally stripped of his royal title on September 21st of the same year. Still, he was the reigning monarch at the time that this coin was struck, even if the republic was blooming, and as such his likeness is featured on the obverse.

Catalog values are quite nice for some issues, but they vary a lot according to the mint mark, which is found to the right of the pedestal on the reverse, just below the word 'Sols'.
