Token Gibraltar James Spittles 1 and 2 Quarts 1820

The British garrison of Gibraltar suffered intermittent small change shortages throughout its history. Gibraltar has been under fourteen sieges since medieval times, and it can be tough for the sovereign nation of a colony to ship coins there when it's under siege.

These tokens were produced by the local craftsman James Spittles to be used by the British soldiers and other people in the small territory. The one and two quarto denominations are identical except for size and weight. They can be quite valuable, especially when then are in better condition, as shown in the listings below.

The token in the picture comes from world-renowned auction house Spink in London. It is in beautiful condition with little wear, beautiful surfaces, and excellent eye appeal. It sold for 170 GBP (about $265 US dollars) in a 2010 auction. CoinQuest thanks Spink for use of their coin photo.
