Central America 2 and 8 Reales 1824 to 1847

Central America 2 and 8 Reales 1824 to 1847

The Federal Republic of Central America, known at first as the United Provinces of Central America, was a sovereign state in Central America between 1823 and 1838. The republic consisted of present-day states of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, i.e., north of Panama and south of Mexico.

Coins from this republic are quite rare. The one in our picture comes from Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles. It is an exceptional piece with a Costa Rick mint mark, fully uncirculated, and with exquisite eye appeal. It sold at a 2008 auction for (are you ready?) $18500. Wow. Most coins are not as valuable as this one.

Many times you see these coins with holes or other severe damage. Value plummets to roughly bullion value:

2 REALES: 0.197 troy ounces silver
8 REALES: 0.786 ounces silver

CoinQuest thanks Goldberg's for use of their coin image. It is a privilege to be able to tell people about such numismatic treasures.

While these coins almost never reach Goldberg kind of money, they are still valuable. Each coin stands on its own merits, so we can give only super-approximate evaluations. If you have a nice-looking coin, you should take it to a professional coin dealer or a knowledgeable collector for an in-person appraisal. The denomination, 2 or 8 reales (2R or 8R), appears on the tree side.

2 REALES DATED 1825:

2 REALES DATED 1831 or 1832:

8 REALES (all dates except as noted):
worn: $80 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $150
well preserved: $350

Some 8 reales coins bear *better dates* that are worth two or three times the values above. These better dates are:

1830NG
1831CRF
1831NG
1834NG

The Goldberg coin pictured is an 1831CRE. It catalogs at $4000 in average circulated condition.
