This, apparently, is a merchant token, although we have been unable to place 'Ames Furniture Federal Savings.' And, sure enough, it looks like an old-fashioned ice box on both sides. Judging from the composition and style, it comes from the early to mid-1900s.
Tokens like this are collected by a small but energetic subset of coin collectors, and this is what makes them valuable. However, with only a small subset collecting, values are not high:
worn: $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $3
well preserved: $5
fully uncirculated: $12
Use our Important Terminology page to properly interpret these catalog values.
Thomas Ruffing has written to us, pointing out that the object on these tokens is likely a parking booth, and that a similar design can be seen on other parking tokens. He writes: I have come to the conclusion that they are parking tokens, the object on the coin is exactly the same as other parking tokens and is on various other ones. I have not found where it was, but I believe this was for a shared parking lot of a Federal Savings, and an AMES Furniture.
Thanks for the info, Tom. We appreciate it!
