France Octagonal Silver Jetons 1800 to 1880

Jetons like this one are usually more valuable than common jetons because they are made of silver, about one-half ounce, and because their artwork is superior. There are many patterns and many inscriptions. All carry, at least roughly, the same value. Dave's example shows Louis XVIII and bears the sly Latin expression LEX EST QUODCUMQUE NOTAMUS meaning (roughly) 'Law is whatever they want us to see.'

A silver octagonal jeton in the condition shown in our picture would usually sell retail for $75 to $100 US dollars. If you were selling one to a coin dealer, he or she might pay $25 to $50 for it. Approximate catalog values are:
