During the 1800s, many different octagonal jetons were minted in different areas of France. The snazzy shape may have been used in order to clearly distinguish them from official coins. These jetons, or tokens, were used as a form of local currency in everyday commerce within the areas they were struck.
Chanpigneulles is a commune in northeastern France. There, these 5 franc jetons were minted towards the end of the 19th century. The metal seems to be brass, and they are quite large at 31 millimeters in diameter. An example of a silver octagon jeton appears on this CoinQuest page. Approximate values are as follows:
worn: $10
average circulated: $15
well preserved: $30
fully uncirculated: $80
