This is one example of an Islamic yassin pilgrim token or 'magic coin.' Seven instances yassin (or yasin) from the Qur'an, the central religious text of Islam, appear on the back, with a butterfly pattern on the front. Other tokens of this type bear other patterns, including old man pilgrims and ships. A good place for more information is zeno.ru. Some tokens are made of nickel or other base metals. Be sure to test tokens for metallic content if gold or silver is advertised.
These tokens are generally given for 'good luck' and 'remembrance' to Islamic faithful in Southeast Asia (e.g., Malaysia, Indonesia) making their way to Mecca. They are slowly finding their way into collections worldwide. Typical catalog values run like this:
worn: $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $3
well preserved: $10
fully uncirculated: $25
The sentimental value of these tokens may send prices very high. The values quoted above are for tokens purchased by non-sentimental collectors. Our Important Terminology page shows how to interpret these catalog values.
