The Renaissance (re-birth) spanned roughly from the 14th to the 17th century, beginning in Italy and later spreading to the rest of Europe. There was amazing progress in art, science, music, and religion. The printing press, for instance, was a key element of technology that engendered the growth. In religious circles, Martin Luther spearheaded a Reformation of the then-apostate Catholic church, bringing new-found personal faith to many. There are numerous medallions which commemorate Luther's contribution to society, and this one was produced for the Chicago World's Fair of 1933 and 1934.
Most Luther commemorative medals sell for $100 to $250 US dollars today, and this one falls in line with these figures, somewhat to the lower end. If you have a medal to sell to a dealer, figure he or she would pay about one-half of retail value. Such mark-ups are necessary to keep the dealership solvent.
Medals that are scratched, stained, cleaned, nicked, or gouged will be worth much less than problem-free pieces.
