Germany Bavaria 2 Thaler (3 1/2 Gulden) 1839
You don't see coins like these being made anymore. Now THAT'S a design - big, bold and beautiful! These huge silver coins dual-denominated as 2 thalers, or 3½ gulden, were struck for just a single year in the old German state of 'Bayern', or Bavaria as it's known in English.
Reitersäule means 'rider column'. The coin commemorates the construction of a large equestrian statue of Maximilian I. The statue was made by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and still stands today on the Wittelsbacherplatz in Munich. Catalog values are quite respectable, as listed below:
