Anyone who likes animals will like pre-Euro Irish coinage. From 1928 to 2000 Ireland's coins all sport an animal figure on one side and the Celtic harp on the other. A fun collecting challenge is to assemble a set of Irish coins, one for each animal. There are about a dozen different animals.
It would not be expensive to assemble such a set. Here are typical catalog prices for the 1 pound (punt) coin minted between 1900 and 2000 with a majestic red deer:
worn: $2 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $3
well preserved: $5
fully uncirculated: $7
Actual buy and sell values are lower than these catalog values. Read our Terminology page for more pricing information.
