The Federal Republic of German (the old 'West Germany') issued 2 mark coins between 1957 and 2001. These coins are made of copper nickel and carry the stylized imperial eagle on the reverse, with a bust of a famous person on the obverse ('heads' side). The famous person changes over the years, but the imperial eagle stays the same.
As a modern coin made of non-precious metal, these are not worth very much. The earlier dates are somewhat in demand, and there are a few special dates as shown below.
2 MARKS DATED 1957 TO 1964
worn: $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulted: $2
well preserved: $5
fully uncirculated: $45
2 MARKS DATED 1965 TO 1969
worn: less than $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulted: $1
well preserved: $3
fully uncirculated: $15
2 MARKS DATED 1970 TO 2001
worn: less than $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulted: $1
well preserved: $2
fully uncirculated: $5
The coin in our picture is uncirculated and has picked up some striking blue toning, probably from exposure to a chemical-laced atmosphere. Some collectors enjoy toned coins and are willing to pay a premium for them. Most collectors do not like toned coins.
The values above apply to all dates and mint marks, except a few which are worth more, as follows:
1959F: $60 in well preserved condition
1964G: $25 well preserved
1984D, F, G, and J: $5 well preserved
1993A, D, F, G, J: $4 well preserved
1995D, F, J with Willy Brandt (not with Franz Strauss): $10 well preserved
As always on CoinQuest, these are catalog values which must be properly interpreted. See our Important Terminology page.
