Ancient Greece (Thracia) Gold Stater with Roman Consul 42BC

Look at the dazzling coin in our picture. Wow. It is from Heritage Auctions where it sold for $1450 US dollars during 2014. Its amazing state of preservation, clear inscriptions and devices, and well-centered format send the price into high levels. Lesser coins will not generally reach that high.

The description from Heritage reads:

THRACIAN DYNASTS. Koson (ca. 44-42 BC). AV stater (21mm, 8.35 gm, 12h). Roman consul (L. Junius Brutus) walking left, accompanied by two lictors fore and aft, monogram before, KOΣON in exergue / Eagle with spread wings standing left on scepter, clutching laurel wreath in right talon.

Apparently that's Lucius Junius Brutus heading from Rome toward Thracia flanked by two guards.

The same pattern is found on silver coins (drachm) which are less valuable than their gold (stater) counterparts.

The values above are very approximate. Collectors of ancient coins are a discerning bunch. They will pay more for superb specimens, but shun coins with problems such as gouges, corrosion, mutilation, and off-center strikes.
