These beautiful gold escudos were minted in Spain between 1865 and 1873. They bear the image of Queen Isabel II on the front and a crowned and draped coat of arms on the back. The denomination appears on the back as 2 es, 4 es, or 10 es:
2 ESCUDOS: 15 mm diameter, 0.0485 troy ounces gold
4 ESCUDOS: 17 mm diameter, 0.0971 ounces gold
10 ESCUDOS: 22 mm diameter, 0.2427 ounces gold
To compute approximate catalog values, first compute the Base Value (BV) by multiplying the gold content by the current price of gold. For instance, if you have a 10 escudos coin and the current price of gold (look it up at kitco.com, it changes every day) is $1285 US dollars per troy ounce, BV is 0.2427 x 1285 = $311.
If your coin is heavily worn or damaged with a hole, cleaning, or other disfigurement, it is worth BV. For coins without problems:
2 ESCUDOS
well preserved: BV + $10
fully uncirculated: BV + $100
2 escudos dated 1868 are quite rare, cataloging for $800 in average circulated condition
4 ESCUDOS
well preserved: BV + $50
fully uncirculated: BV + $100
4 escudos dated 1865 and 1866 with 7 pointed stars are rare, cataloging for $800 in average circulated condition (7 pointed stars must be present)
10 ESCUDOS
well preserved: BV + $50
fully uncirculated: BV + $200
10 escudos dated 1866 with 7 pointed stars are exceedingly rare, cataloging for $3000 in average circulated condition
