Colombia 5 Pesos 1980 to 1989

Colombia 5 Pesos 1980 to 1989

Coins dated 1981 are sometimes mus-interpreted as 1861, but coins bearing the inscription REPUBLICA DE COLOMBIA first appeared in 1886, well after 1861. These coins, dated 1980 to 1989, bear an image of Policarpa Salavarrieta, also known as 'La Pola,' a seamstress who spied for the Revolutionary Forces during the Spanish Reconquista. She was captured by Spanish Royalists and ultimately executed for high treason. She is now considered a heroine of the independence of Colombia.

These are modern coins made of non-precious metal. as such they are worth a few US cents each. An uncirculated specimen might sell for $1 or $2 US dollars.
