France 20 and 50 Centimes, 1 and 2 Francs 1853 to 1863

France 20 and 50 Centimes, 1 and 2 Francs 1853 to 1863

Wow. The coin in our picture comes from Ira and Larry Goldberg. It is in gorgeous condition. You rarely see them this nice. Even though it is a common date, because of this wonderful condition, this coin sold at auction for $220 US dollars in a 2008 auction. The hammer would fall at a higher price today, I'm pretty sure of that.

These coins are minted in silver as follows:

20 CENTIMES: 0.029 troy ounces silver
50 CENTIMES: 0.072 ounces silver
1 FRANC: 0.145 ounces
2 FRANCS: 0.289 ounces

As with most French coins of the period, there are mostly common date coins that all have about the same value, plus a few special *good dates* that are worth more. The values below are all catalog values for coins without damage such as spots, stains, cleanings, scratches, nicks, and gouges. If your coin is not in the *good date* list, it is a common date. Values for *good date* coins are catalog values in well preserved condition.
