Spain 1, 2, 4 and 8 Maravedis (Carol III and IIII) 1770 to 1808

Spain 1, 2, 4 and 8 Maravedis (Carol III and IIII) 1770 to 1808

Charles (Carlos, Carolus) III and Charles IIII reigned in Spain from 1759 to 1788 and 1788 to 1808, respectively. Their portraits on their coins look about the same, and values are not that different, so we combine them on this page.

These old maravedi coins are more common that one might think, but coins in good shape are rare and worth quite a bit.

The denomination appears near the King's chin. Here are some stats:

8 maravedis dated before 1772 are rare and catalog at $500 in well preserved condition
8 maravedis dated 1772, 1782, 1783, and 1792 are worth more, cataloging at about $130 in well preserved condition

See our important terminology page for information about converting catalog values to actual values.

The coin system in the United States is pretty much based on old Spanish coinage. The old Spanish 8 reales coins (often called pieces of 8) turned into US silver dollars. Maraverdis are fractions of the reales denomination.
