Nero (his Latin title was Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus) was Roman Emperor from 54 to 68AD. According to Wikipedia, Nero focused much of his attention on diplomacy, trade, and enhancing the cultural life of the Empire. He ordered theaters built and promoted athletic games. In 64, most of Rome was destroyed in the Great Fire of Rome, which many Romans believed Nero himself had started.
Copper coins with inscription IMP NERO CAESAR AVG MAX TR PPP were minted in Gaul (France). There is also a well-known counterfeit coin with that inscription (see below). Genuine coins come in three denominations:
AS: 25 mm diameter, 10 to 13 grams
DUPONDIUS: 20 mm diamter, 10 to 11 grams
SESTERTIUS: 25 to 29 mm diameter, 18 to 25 grams
The coin in our main picture is an as which weighs 11.1 gram and has Victory flying on the back. It sold for 800 Swiss francs (about $830 US dollars) in a 2013 auction by Numismatica Ars Classica. Very approximate catalog values are:
AS:
worn: $60
average circulated: $300
well preserved: $800
DUPONDIUS:
worn: $60
average circulated: $400
well preserved: $1000
SESTERTIUS:
worn: $100
average circulated: $750
well preserved: $2000
As with all ancient coins, each specimen stands on its own merits. Catalog values are very, very approximate.
Note to requester Alice: Your coin has inscriptions IMP NERO CAESAR AVG MAX TR PPP on the front ant NERONE IMPERATORE on the back. This is a fake, worth zero.
