These French coins with the two back-to-back L's, a version of Louis XIV's (LVD XIII) royal monogram, were struck for just a few years at the start of the 18th century. Two different denominations were issued: 15 and 30 deniers.
15 DENIERS: 1.2 grams, 18.5 millimeters diameter
30 DENIERS: 2.5 grams, 23.5 millimeters diameter
The 30 deniers come with either an 'AA' or a 'D' mint mark. Both denominations and mint marks are worth about the same, listed below:
worn: $20 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $100
well preserved: $250
fully uncirculated: $550
The coin in our picture is in excellent shape (you don't see them this nice very often) and it sold for 150 euros (about $190 US dollars) during a 2012 auction by cgb.fr in Paris. CoinQuest thanks cgb.fr for use of their coin photo.
Damaged coins will be worth a few dollars at most.
