There are many forms of this Islamic pilgrimage (hadj or hajj) token or 'magic coin' with an old pilgrim on the front and a stylized version of the Arabic word yasin repeated multiple times on the back. A 'yasin 3' coin has 3 repetitions of the Arabic word. A 'yasin 5' coin has 5 repetitions, and so forth.
Yasin is a popular male name in Arabic. But there is also a chapter in the Qu'ran, Surah 36, called Ya Sin, which establishes the Qur'an as a divine source and warns those that mock Allah's revelations. Repeating it on the coin strengthens the meaning.
A good place for lots of information is zeno.ru. Some tokens are made of nickel or other base metals. We have seen some of these made in silver, so have yours tested if you think this might be the case. Silver tokens are worth more than those made of non-precious metal.
These modern tokens are generally given for 'good luck' and 'remembrance' to Islamic faithful in Southeast Asia (e.g., Malaysia, Indonesia) making their way to Mecca.
Typical catalog values run like this:
ALL FORMS OF THIS TOKEN MADE OF NON-PRECIOUS METAL:
worn: $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $3
well preserved: $10
fully uncirculated: $25
The sentimental value of these tokens may send prices very high. The values quoted above are for tokens purchased by non-sentimental collectors. Our Important Terminology page shows how to interpret these catalog values.
