The Basque Country (also known as Euskadi Country) is a Spanish autonomous community, located in the northeastern part of the Cantabrian fringe. After a long and complicated process initiated in 1931 the first autonomous government was formed during the Civil War on October 7, 1936 after the adoption of the Statute of Autonomy Vasco. During the Spanish Civil War, the Basque Government was ruled by José Antonio Aguirre. During this brief period, the Provisional Government of the Basque Country was minted 2 types of coins: 1 peseta and 2 pesetas. These coins are made of non precious nickel.
